10 Liver Cleansing Foods

The liver is an essential organ with several purposes including acting as a filter for toxins. Foods that can stress your liver include alcohol, sugar filled foods, processed foods and fried foods.

These foods take a toll on our livers, making them fatigued and inefficient when it comes to toxic removal. Luckily, we can refresh our liver and naturally stimulate our livers with the following foods:

Beets: High in iron and rich in plant flavonoids and beta-carotene (two nutrients that naturally stimulate and encourage healthy liver function).

Turmeric: Cleanses the body of carcinogens and reduces inflammation. Put this spice in soups, bean chili’s or lentil dishes. Turmeric is also good in tea form.

Garlic: A small clove has the power to encourage liver enzyme activity to flush the body of harmful toxins. Garlic’s power comes from allicin and selenium, natural ingredients that keep the liver healthy.

Green Tea: A super food that detoxifies with helpful antioxidants called catechins, which flush out bad toxins that can contribute to weight gain.

Grapefruit (make sure there are no interactions with medications): High in vitamin C and rich in antioxidants, known for their natural liver cleansing prowess. The liver can reap the benefits of just a daily cup of fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice or a small half of a fresh grapefruit to eradicate evil carcinogens and other bodily toxins.

Olive oil: Cold-pressed olive oil, the central fixture of the Mediterranean style of eating boosts healthy liver function. Cold pressed extra virgin oil boosts liver function. Mix oils by using olive oil for dressings, hemp or avocado for baking and flaxseed oil for cooking. All four oils support liver detoxification.

Leafy greens: Baby spinach, kale, arugula, dandelion, greens, mustard greens, and lettuces contributes to body detoxification as they can filter and control the flow of bile, the actual filtering substance, inside our bodies. These leafy greens also contain chlorophyll, which neutralizes heavy metals and banish environmental toxins, chemicals and pesticides.

Lemons and Limes: Citrus fruits pack vitamin C and also flush toxic materials out of the body as well.

A great detox and anti-inflammatory drink comprise; ½ lemon, ½ teaspoon of ginger juice (or 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger), 2 to 6 drops of cayenne drops and 8 to 12 ounces of filtered water. Add a dab of stevia or monk fruit to sweeten for a healthy daily tonic.
